Side Notes: This popular English and Scottish ballad is known as “Dives and Lazarus.” The song was included in a collection of 305 ballads compiled by Francis James Child in the late nineteenth century and published by Houghton Mifflinin 1882 and 1898. The song is also a traditional Christmas carol and can be found as a folk song in various regions of the world. The words to the original English ballad are based on the story found in Luke 16:19-31.
